History of the UNLV Rebel Soccer Foundation

The UNLV Rebel Soccer Foundation was established to support the men’s and women’s soccer programs at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The foundation’s mission is to ensure that the soccer programs can compete at the highest levels while producing student-athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom. The foundation plays a crucial role in providing financial support, resources, and community engagement to help the teams thrive.

 

The foundation’s history is deeply intertwined with the legacy of UNLV soccer, which has touched the lives of many players, coaches, and their families over the past 40 years. It was formed during a challenging period when the men’s soccer program faced the threat of elimination. Key members of the Las Vegas soccer community rallied to save the program, leading to the creation of the foundation. This pivotal moment ensured the continued existence and growth of UNLV soccer, allowing it to build towards a nationally competitive program with top-notch facilities.

 

Today, the UNLV Rebel Soccer Foundation continues to make significant contributions to the soccer community. It supports various initiatives, including scholarships, facility improvements, and community outreach programs. The foundation also organizes events and fundraising activities to engage fans and alumni, fostering a strong sense of community and support for the teams. Through these efforts, the foundation helps maintain the legacy of UNLV soccer and ensures its future success.

Board of Directors

Daniel Giraldo
President

Dan Giraldo serves as Deputy Director for Administrative Services for Clark County, overseeing internal support functions, intergovernmental relations, and policy analytics. Previously, Dan was Senior Vice President at Bank of America, where he spearheaded corporate social responsibility initiatives in Las Vegas and Southern Nevada, managing philanthropic contributions, Sponsorships and Events, managing Public Relations and cultivating relationships with public officials and community leaders. He also liaised with federal regulators, addressing concerns from elected officials and Attorneys General across multiple states.

 

Dan’s public service includes his role as Chief of Staff for the Speaker of the Assembly during the Nevada 2011 Legislative session, where he helped advance legislation on education, economic development, and government reform. He also served as District Director for Congresswoman Titus, overseeing operations for Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District.

 

As a graduate of UNLV’s Hotel and Restaurant Administration, Dan his early career working in the restaurant industry, managing operations and improving underperforming locations across the US.

 

A native of Casper, Wyoming, Dan played soccer at UNLV in 1991 and treasures that experience as he prioritizes his role as a devoted father and husband. His broad expertise in administration, corporate social responsibility, and community service reflects his dedication to both professional excellence and personal growth.

Mark Haley
Vice President

Mark Haley is a seasoned executive with over 40 years of experience in the hospitality industry, leading various public, private, and governmental organizations. He has a proven track record of delivering critical products and services at major tradeshows and events across the United States. As the president of Smart City Networks for the past 16 years, Mark has overseen sales, finance, and operations, providing technology and telecommunication services to over 50 public convention and event venues. His leadership has resulted in a 90% contract retention rate, demonstrating his ability to navigate complex contracting processes and political environments.

 

Before joining Smart City, Mark served as Vice President of Facilities for the Las Vegas Convention & Visitor’s Authority (LVCVA), where he managed the Las Vegas Convention Center, hosting prestigious events like the Consumer Electronics Show and the National Association of Broadcasters. His career also includes a 23-year tenure at ARAMARK Corporation, where he rose to Executive Vice President of the Convention & Cultural Attractions Group, overseeing a $235 million annual revenue operation. Mark’s extensive experience in both finance and operations has made him a respected figure in the industry.

 

In addition to his professional achievements, Mark has contributed to the academic field as an adjunct professor at UNLV’s William F. Harrah’s School of Hospitality. He is actively involved in the Academy of Hospitality & Tourism’s Board of Directors and has been recognized for his soccer achievements at the University of Scranton, where he is a member of the Wall of Fame. Mark’s diverse background and leadership skills have made him a prominent figure in the hospitality and events industry.

Frederic Apcar
Treasurer

Frederic Apcar is a seasoned entrepreneur and tax consultant with a strong background in international tax compliance. He currently is the Nevada Regional Director for Alera Group, an independent, national insurance and financial services firm.

 

In addition to his professional endeavors, Frederic has been actively involved in the community, serving on the Board of Directors for After School All-Stars since 2007 and holding various positions within the United States Youth Soccer Association of Nevada, including Treasurer since 2013. His educational background includes a B.S. in Business Administration from Chapman University, a Juris Doctor from Columbus University, and a Master of Laws in International Tax from Regent University.

 

Frederic’s soccer achievements are notable, having played and trained in various countries, including England, Denmark, Spain, and Germany. He played for teams such as SK Austria Wien, U.D. San Pedro, and the Nevada Aces and Reno Rattlers. His multilingual abilities in Czech, Spanish, and French further highlight his diverse skill set and international experience.

Timothy Cashman

Timothy Cashman is a prominent business leader with a diverse automotive and real estate background. He began his career at Cashman Equipment in Reno, Nevada, where he later managed operations in both Reno and Elko. In 1993, Timothy purchased Cashman Cadillac, Inc., the only Cadillac franchise in southern Nevada, which was sold to Sonic Automotive Group in 2000. Additionally, he was a co-owner of Southern Nevada Harley-Davidson Sales, Inc., where he successfully expanded the business to multiple locations, including Henderson and Red Rock Harley-Davidson, before selling it in 2018.

 

Timothy’s business interests also extend to real estate development, as he is a partner in Somersett Development Company, Ltd., LLC. He is actively involved in community organizations and serves on the Board of Directors for the Nevada Taxpayers Association and is the Chairman of the C.M. Russell Museum. Timothy is also on the Board of Directors for the Tahoe Fund and is a past chairman. He previously held positions such as Chairman of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Governing Board of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. Timothy has also served on various committees and boards, including the Gorman High School Investment Committee and Las Vegas Events.

 

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Timothy is dedicated to giving back to the community. He is actively involved with the Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada and has successfully helped them fundraise over $20,000,000 for their new facility. His commitment to community service is evident through his participation in numerous organizations and efforts to support local initiatives. Timothy’s leadership and dedication to business and community make him a respected figure in Nevada.

Jaime M. Chilton

Jaime M. Chilton is a seasoned professional with extensive experience in tradeshow and event planning, marketing, and business development. She has held various roles, including Special Events Consultant at Benhar Consulting, Creative Director at November Inc., and Global Account Executive at Elevated Meeting Solutions. Jaime has managed high-profile events such as the 2023 Governor’s Inauguration and Ball, and has been responsible for conference sponsorship management, VIP travel logistics, and contract negotiations. Her ability to plan, prioritize, and manage complex projects under tight deadlines has been a key factor in her success.

 

Jaime’s career also includes significant contributions to the State Bar of Nevada, where she served as a Consultant and Continuing Legal Education Event Planner. She coordinated events for the National High School Mock Trial Competition and various legal education seminars, ensuring all logistics, sponsorships, and promotional activities were effectively managed. As Executive Director at LVI Global, Jaime was responsible for public relations, marketing, and membership growth for the International Association of Comprehensive Aesthetics (IACA), organizing annual meetings and regional seminars.

 

In addition to her professional achievements, Jaime is actively involved in her community. She serves on the Board of Trustees for The Meadows School, where she chairs the Education and School Life Committee and is a member of the Development Committee. Jaime has also been a soccer coach at The Meadows School since March 2022, demonstrating her commitment to youth development and sports. Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Timothy J. McGarry

Timothy J. McGarry is a seasoned legal professional and business leader with a background in law and construction. He began his career as a Law Clerk for the Honorable Joseph Pavlikowski and later became an Associate Attorney at Schreck, Jones, Bernhard, Woloson & Godfrey. Tim then became a Partner at Raliegh, Hunt & McGarry, where he worked until 2006. From 2010 to 2019, he was co- owner of Forté Specialty Contractors, a Las Vegas-based general contractor and served as a Special Advisor to the Engelstad Family Foundation.

 

Tim’s business ventures include co-managing Verano Limited Partnership, which owns a master- planned community in San Antonio, Texas. He is also the founder and chairman of the Miracle League of Las Vegas, a state-of-the-art baseball complex for players with cognitive and physical challenges.

 

In the world of soccer, Tim played for UNLV in 1979 and 1980. In 2011 Tim facilitated a significant gift to the UNLV soccer program and serves on the Board of Directors for the UNLV Rebel Soccer Foundation. His contributions to the sport extend beyond playing, as he has been instrumental in supporting and developing soccer programs through his involvement with the UNLV Rebel Soccer Foundation. Tim’s dedication to both his professional career and community service highlights his commitment to making a positive impact in various fields.

Rod Q. Santa Cruz

Rod Q. Santa Cruz is a highly experienced healthcare and insurance professional with over 28 years in the industry. He is currently a Group Benefits Broker at USI, where he has been a key member of the Employee Benefits team since 2001. Rod has a strong background in contract negotiation, provider networks, and PBM solutions, and has developed successful broker/producer teams. He previously served as Regional Sales Manager for John Hancock Life Insurance Co and District Sales Coordinator for AFLAC, overseeing sales and broker development.

 

Rod’s career also includes international marketing and sales for Deerhorn Bean & Seed Export Co, where he managed business development and partnerships with countries like Spain, Brazil, South Africa, and Mexico. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in International Business from the University of Minnesota and is fluent in multiple languages, including French, Spanish, Italian, English, and Portuguese. Rod is actively involved in various professional and community organizations, including the Clark County Underwriters Association and the Latin Chamber of Commerce.

 

Rod’s love of soccer began as one of his first memories, growing up in Bolivia, South America where “Futbol” or soccer is a way of life. From humble playing on dirt fields, complete with rocks and pebbles and stick goal posts, he made his way onto the futbol squad of C.C.S. (Cochabamba Cooperative School) for the years 1986 and 1987. After placing second place for the nationals, he was offered an in-state tuition scholarship for Soccer and track and field to the University of Minnesota, in Morehead campus Fargo/Morehead, MN in 1988. Unfortunately, an ACL injury cut short any future at said university. From that point on he supported his love of futbol by playing with friends in local leagues, coaching his daughter’s minor soccer team, supporting the Santa Cruz Tauhichi Aguilera futbol academy through family and friend foundations in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, and joining the UNLV Rebel Soccer foundation.

 

In addition to his professional achievements, Rod is dedicated to community service and education. He serves on the boards of the Vegas 32 student scholarship board, the UNLV Rebel Soccer Foundation, and the Friends of UNLV Board. Rod also volunteers with the Millennium Scholarship program and Hearts Alive Village, where he and his daughter Marleigh are involved in animal care. His commitment to soccer is evident through his involvement with the UNLV Rebel Soccer Foundation and his support for youth soccer initiatives.

Garren Sepede

Garren Sepede is a distinguished alumnus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Finance. During his time at UNLV, he also excelled as a goalie for the Division One collegiate soccer team, showcasing his athletic talent. His soccer journey began at Chaparral High School, where he was a three-year Letterman, demonstrating his commitment and skill in the sport.

 

Professionally, Garren founded Strategic Wealth Management Group Inc. in 1999 and has since served as its President and Chief Investment Officer. His leadership and expertise have been instrumental in the firm’s success. Garren’s dedication to the UNLV community is evident through his role as President of the UNLV Soccer Alumni Organization and his involvement in the Finance Committee for UNLV’s Title IX accreditation. His contributions were recognized when he was honored as the College of Business Alumni of the Year in 1999.

 

Beyond his professional achievements, Garren is actively involved in philanthropic endeavors. He serves on the board of the Las Vegas Animal Foundation and values family life with his wife Janet, to whom he has been married for 37 years. They have two sons: Cameron, a UNLV baseball alumnus with a master’s degree from Denver University, and Ryan, a graduate of BYU and a member of BYU’s Division One collegiate baseball team. Garren’s multifaceted career and commitment to family and community exemplify his strong character and dedication to excellence.

John M. Sullivan

John M. Sullivan is the President and General Counsel for Red Rock Administrative Services, LLC, overseeing operations for a family of businesses including Racing & Gaming Services, Viaero Event Center, and Las Vegas Ice Center. He has a rich background in real estate development and commercial gaming, having previously led Territory Incorporated and worked in various legal and gaming roles. John holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Southern California and a Juris Doctorate from George Washington University Law School.

 

John is deeply involved in charitable activities in the Las Vegas valley, serving on the executive committee and as treasurer of the Three Square food bank, which provides millions of pounds of food to the food-insecure. He is also on the advisory committee for Project 150, addressing the needs of high-school-aged homeless students. His past roles include director positions at Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, Bishop Gorman High School, and The Las Vegas Founders.

 

John’s involvement in soccer began as a youth player and later expanded to coaching and managing at various levels. He currently serves as the Club liaison and administrator for the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) for Heat FC in Las Vegas, demonstrating his commitment to developing young soccer talent in the community.

Roger Tabor, PRP

A native of Las Vegas, with a strong background in both finance and community service, Roger  has made significant contributions to the local community and the soccer world. Professionally, Roger served as the Managing Director of Investments at Wells Fargo Investments, beginning in 1991. Additionally, he held several notable positions, such as President of the Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club since 2005, Associate Tournament Director for the Las Vegas Mayor’s Cup International Showcase since 2005, and Director of the Las Vegas Fremont Rotary Club since 1998. His involvement in the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame as a Trustee since 2012 further highlights their dedication to supporting local sports.

 

With a lifelong passion for soccer, Roger has played an instrumental role in developing and promoting the sport in Nevada. His soccer career began as a player for UNLV Men’s Soccer, where they served as team captain in 1979. He later transitioned to leadership roles, including First Vice President of US Youth Soccer – NV and Vice President of Nevada South Youth Soccer. As President of the Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club, Roger been at the forefront of fostering young talent and promoting the sport at the grassroots level. Their contributions to the Las Vegas Mayor’s Cup International Showcase demonstrate the Las Vegas community’s commitment to organizing and managing large-scale soccer events that attract teams from around the world.

 

Throughout his career, Roger has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to both the financial sector and the soccer community. Notable awards include Leadership Las Vegas (1990-1991), Rotarian of the Year (2010-11), and Las Vegas Citizen of the Month (May 2005). He was also recognized as one of the “Top 40 under 40” by In Business in 1995. Roger’s educational background includes a degree in Finance Investments from UNLV and certification as a Plan Sponsor Retirement Professional. This blend of professional success, community service, and passion for soccer makes him an exemplary leader on the UNLV Rebel Soccer Foundation.

Michael W. Thompson, M.S.W., P.H.D.

Michael W. Thompson is a seasoned professional with extensive experience in healthcare management and early childhood education. He is the owner of Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academies of Nevada, a multi-million dollar early learning center, where he has been responsible for developing business plans, securing financing, and managing daily operations since 2000. Michael has also held significant roles in various healthcare organizations, including Director of Managed Care Contracts at Alliance Health Network and CEO of Harmony HealthCare of Nevada, where he oversaw clinic operations and contract negotiations.

 

Michael’s career also includes positions such as Regional Manager at Pacific Heritage Administrator and Account Executive at The Holman Group, where he specialized in medical insurance and behavioral health services. His diverse background spans roles from clinical therapist to youth minister, showcasing his commitment to both professional excellence and community service. He holds a Doctorate in Philosophy from LaSalle University and a Master of Social Work from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

 

In the world of soccer, Michael played for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) during its inaugural NCAA-sanctioned season in 1974-1975. He has 19 years of experience as a soccer head coach and is a licensed National “D” Level Coach. Michael has also served as an Olympic Development Program State Advisor and a referee for the Southern Nevada Official Association since 2009. His contributions to soccer include founding board membership and past treasurer roles in the Elite Soccer League of Nevada and the United States Youth Soccer Association of Nevada.
