Three Rebels named Preseason All-WAC

8/15/2018

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – For the third time in the past five years, UNLV men’s soccer has been picked to finish second in the Western Athletic Conference as the league office announced the 2018 WAC Preseason Coaches Poll Wednesday morning. In addition, three Rebels were named to the Preseason All-WAC squad, the second-highest number in the conference behind preseason favorite Seattle’s four representatives. This marks the first time since 2015 that UNLV placed three on the team.

Making a repeat appearance on the preseason team is junior midfielder Timo Mehlich, (Mönchengladbach, Germany). He claimed first-time All-WAC honors and second-team all-region recognition in 2017 after posting 16 points off five goals and six assists. Sophomore forward Marco Gonzalez (Las Vegas) was the Rebels’ second-leading scorer as a freshman, notching six goals and six assists for 18 points, and joined Mehlich in posting three game-winning goals for the year. Senior defender Adam Musovski is the third Rebel on the preseason team, coming off an outstanding season on the backline that earned him First Team All-WAC honors. This marks the fourth straight year a Musovski has been named to the Preseason All-WAC squad, as his brother Danny was a member of three straight teams from  2015-17.

The Rebels return seven of 11 starters from last year’s squad that posted an 11-9-1 mark while tying for second in the conference standings with 18 points (6-3 WAC record).

They received 105 total points in the poll to place second, narrowly ahead of third place Air Force (104 points). Seattle received nine first-place votes to place first in the preseason poll with 119, while Air Force has the remaining three first place votes. Grouped close together was fourth place San Jose State (84), fifth place Utah Valley (79) and Grand Canyon in sixth (75). Rounding out the poll, CSU Bakersfield was seventh (55), UTRGV eighth (49), UMKC ninth (38), new league member Cal Baptist was 10th (30), Houston Baptist 11th (28), and Incarnate Word finished the poll in 12th with 26 points.

UNLV opens the season on the road for the sixth straight year, beginning with a Friday, Aug. 24 contest against Florida Atlantic (3 pm) on the Utah Valley campus, the first of four straight games for the Rebels away from Las Vegas. The home opener will be on Friday, Sept. 7, against Wofford at 7 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field on Alumni Weekend, which kicks off earlier that day with the annual Alumni Game at 5 pm. UNLV Men’s Soccer’s Connors, Lynam and Soresman Help Downtown LVSC to National Semifinals

July 26, 2018

Las Vegas club looking to become first-ever boys team from the state of Nevada to win the national title

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Three members of the UNLV men’s soccer team, incoming freshmen Dylan Soresman and John Lynam, along with associate head coach Liam Connors, are bidding to help the Downtown LVSC become the first-ever boy’s club team from the state of Nevada to win a national championship as they will play Saturday morning in the U-18 semifinals of the 2018 US Youth Soccer National Championships. This year’s event, which features the top teams in the U-13 through U-19 age groups, is being held from July 24-July 29 in Frisco, Texas.

Connors is the head coach of the squad, while Soresman and Lynam, both Las Vegas natives, have started all three games for Downtown LVSC this week. They helped the team to first place in the Group B standings with a 3-0 record, thanks to an impressive 8-1 goal differential.

“This would be a great accomplish for the entire team if we win two games and the national title,” said Connors. “The two Rebels on the team have played great as well, especially Soresman’s play on the defensive side to help us allow a tournament low one goal, while Lynam has made his impact known on the offensive side.”

Lynam has a goal and an assist over the first three games, which the team won by scores of 3-0, 2-0 and 3-1. They will take on the Group A second place team, West Coast FC Armour from San Juan Capistrano, California, in the second semifinal game Saturday at 7 am (CST). The winner will meet either Washington Premier or Baltimore Celtic SC in the championship game Sunday at 8 am (CST).

Former Rebel Sophie Cortes Signs Professional Contract In Hungary

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Former UNLV women’s soccer standout Sophie Cortes has signed a professional contract to play for Ferencváros Torna Club, based in Budapest, Hungary. Ferencváros TC is the top club team in the country. Cortes, who was named a United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-American as a senior last fall, graduated from UNLV in the spring with a degree in hospitality management.

“I’m very excited for the experience,” said Cortes. “I’m looking forward to playing in a foreign country and immersing myself in the culture – I couldn’t be happier to have this opportunity.”

Cortes, from Newhall, California, developed into one of the top midfielders in the Mountain West during her four years at UNLV. The two-time MW All-Conference First Team selection had a breakout season in 2017, racking up 32 points on 12 goals and eight assists. The 32 points rank second all-time in a single-season, while her goals and assists were both tied for third-best. For her career, her 16 goals are tied for seventh all-time, her 49 points rank eighth all-time and her 17 assists are fifth-most in program history.

The Rebels open the 2018 campaign with the annual UNLV Invitational, set for August 17-19 at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
