Rebels Fall On Late Goal 3-2 To Wyoming

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV twice battled back from one-goal deficits but could not match a final late goal as the Rebels fell to the visiting Wyoming Cowgirls 3-2 Friday night in Mountain West women’s soccer action from Johann Memorial Field.

Wyoming took an early lead before the Rebels tied the game at 1-1 in the 20th minute, thanks to a penalty kick goal from freshman Lourdes Bosch. The Cowgirls took the lead back just four minutes later and would take that 2-1 lead into halftime despite being outshot 11-8 in the half. 

The second half shots were even more in the Rebels’ favor at 10-4, but the score remained at 2-1 until the final 10 minutes. That’s when McKenna Sullivan grabbed the ball off a defensive deflection and scored from inside the box to knot the game at 2-2 in the 82nd minute. UNLV’s new life didn’t last long however as the Cowgirls came up with the winning score in the 87th minute to steal the 3-2 victory. 

UNLV suffered the loss despite a 21-12 overall edge on total shots and 7-5 on corner kicks. Wyoming did hold the edge on total saves at 10-7.

Mehlich Hat Trick Leads Rout Of Kansas City

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Timo Mehlich turned in a career performance in the first of the two final home games of his career, as the UNLV senior posted the first hat trick of his career with three second half goals as the Rebels blitzed Kansas City 4-1 Friday night in WAC men’s soccer action at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The win increased UNLV’s unbeaten streak to four games, and has moved the Rebels into a tie for fifth place in the league standings at 3-3-1 (10 points), passing the Roos who dropped to eighth place (3-4) as their three-game win streak was snapped.

The Rebels took awhile to get their offense flowing, as it was a scoreless game until the 43rd minute when Connor Ryan scored his first goal of the season for a 1-0 lead, off an assist by Skyler Goo. The goal energized the UNLV squad going into halftime, especially Mehlich. He would score back-to-back goals just 64 seconds apart in the 48th and 50th minutes to quickly push the Rebels ahead by a 3-0 margin. KC broke up the shutout in the 51st minute with a score, but the game would be sealed shortly after when the Roos’ Mikhail McComie was redcarded following a hard foul, leaving the visitors shorthanded the rest of the way. Mehlich then converted a penalty kick in the 66th minute for a 4-1 lead, while giving him the first hat trick at UNLV since Marco Gonzalez scored three times in a 4-1 win over Evansville on Aug. 26, 2018.

UNLV finished with a season-high 28 shots, to just nine for the Roos, while shots on goal were 9-2 in favor of the Rebels. 

NEXT UP: Sunday will be Senior Day for Mehlich and four more Rebels, as UNLV hosts Houston Baptist in a 1 pm contest at Johann Field. That will be the second game of a doubleheader, as the Rebel women will play Colorado State at 10 am.

Rebels Drop 2-1 Road Contest At Fresno State

FRESNO, California (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV came up short in its final road game of the season Sunday afternoon, as the Rebels dropped a 2-1 contest in Mountain West women’s soccer action at Fresno State on the Bulldogs’ Senior Day.

The Bulldogs held a 1-0 halftime lead thanks to a score in the 35th minute. The game went into halftime still at a 1-0 score, before the Rebels tied up the score in the 53rd minute thanks to Malika Markham, as she headed in a ball in the box off a long free kick from Katie Ballou. Unfortunately for the Rebels the game didn’t stay tied for long as Fresno State came back three minutes later for a score in the 56th minute for what would be the game-winning goal.

UNLV was outshot 17-8 for the game, and 7-4 on shots on goal, though did hold a 9-7 edge on corner kicks.

NEXT UP: The Rebels will begin a four-game homestand to end the regular season with a doubleheader Friday night with the Rebel men’s team. The day’s first game will be the UNLV men against Seattle at 5 pm, followed by the UNLV women against Wyoming at 7:30 pm. A free tailgate party with free food and drinks and live music will be open to all with ticketed admission.

Golden Gonzalez Lifts Rebels Past UIW 1-0

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (UNLVRebels.com) – Junior forward Marco Gonzalez scored the golden goal in the 94th minute to give UNLV 1 -0 road victory at Incarnate Word Sunday afternoon in WAC men’s soccer action. With the win, the Rebels pushed their unbeaten streak to three games and now stand at 2-3-1, and are seventh in the standings with seven points.

UIW actually had a 17-7 edge on total shots in the game, but only four of those 17 were on goal, while three of the Rebels’ seven came on frame. The winning score was setup thanks to steal in the midfield by the Rebels, who then served up a long pass to the left side to Gonzalez. The Las Vegas native made a move past his defender into the box and curved a shot to the right post for the score to end the game.

NEXT UP: The Rebels are back home for their final two home games, starting with a home double-header with the UNLV women’s team Friday. The Rebels will host Seattle at 5 pm, while the UNLV women will play Wyoming at 7:30 pm. There will be a free tailgate with free food and drinks available for all with ticketed admission to the games.

Rebels Claim 1-1 Double-OT Road Draw At San Jose State

SAN JOSE, California (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV bounced back from a slow start to score a tying goal in the second half on the road for a 1-1 road draw at San Jose State Thursday night in Mountain West women’s soccer action from the Spartan Soccer Complex.

SJSU took five of the first six shots of the game and notched the game’s first goal in the 8th minute for an early 1-0 lead. UNLV started to pick it up offensively, and would tie the game in the second half thanks to a score by Malika Markham in the 55th minute. Katie Ballou was credited with an assist on the score as well.

The game would go into overtime and in the first extra period the Spartans held a 5-1 edge on shots, while it was 4-1 in favor of UNLV in the second overtime period. That included a sequence in front of the SJSU goal in the final minutes where UNLV appeared to have a great chance on goal but a Spartans defender knocked the ball away to preserve the tie.

Rebels Knock Off First Place Colorado College 2-0

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV scored a pair of second-half goals while goalkeeper Emberly Sevilla recorded a shutout despite facing 15 total shots as the Rebels claimed a 2-0 upset victory over first place Colorado College Sunday afternoon in Mountain West women’s soccer action from Johann Memorial Field.

The Tigers attempted nine shouts on the Rebel goal in the first half but Sevilla and the UNLV defense came up strong to keep it a scoreless game after 45 minutes. UNLV got on the board in the second half thanks to its lone corner kick of the game, as Malika Markham’s kick was headed in by Jadyn Nogues for a score and a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute. The Rebels sealed the win in the 87th minute when Lourdes Bosch dribbled past and threw several Tiger defenders before scoring from outside the box to the top right corner, putting UNLV ahead 2-0.

UNLV won despite having been outshot 15-11, and Colorado College holding a 10-1 edge on corner kicks. Sevilla finished with four saves to earn the clean sheet in goal.

NEXT UP: The Rebels will have their final road trip of the season, starting with Thursday’s contest at San Jose State, starting at 7 pm.
